Confusion over BCPs and menstrual period

After reading a few postings about the possibility of being pregnant while taking BCPs I wish to have some clarification on how the pill actually works.

It is now my understanding that the bleeding during the placebo week on the pill is not actually biologically(?) the same kind of period as one experienced when one is not taking BCPs -- because one has not ovulated. I've also read that one can be pregnant and still get their period (or what seems like a period), especially when on the pill. So, how can I be sure that each month when I have my pill-induced bleeding that I can't be pregnant, like I could when I had my period before taking BCPs? I've started to get paranoid, despite using the pill with great care. I'd sure like to be corrected -- I imagine my logic is flawed somewhere...

Thanks
