Re: PREGNACYFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 4 Jul 2001 11:45:31 -0500 (CDT)
The calendar or rythym method is very unreliable. However, there are several natural methods of birth control that would be worth exploring. Natural birth control enables you to accurately identify your fertile days and you either abstain completely from intercourse during those days (safest) or you use protection (like a condom). The first method is called Natural Family Planning. The second method is called Fertility Awareness Method. This is what my husband and I use. Its a little easier to learn and it allows you to use protection during your fertile phase. Both FAM and NFP require you to take your body basal temperature (BBT) every morning. You also observe your cervical mucous at least 3 times a day (when you go to the bathroom). I would recommend purchasing a book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. This is a very useful reference and self-teaching guide that can help you learn to use natural birth control. The other option is to take a Natural Family Planning class through your local Catholic church. The classes are not meant to "convert" you... the teachers are there solely to teach you how to observe your body and chart your fertility signs. You can use either method both to achieve pregnancy or to avoid pregnancy. Natural birth control methods are only appropriate for mature, responsible adults. If you have further questions, feel free to email me and I'll see if I can help. Thanks. J
