Contraceptive side effects

I have been taking the birth control pill for around 8 years to correct my heavy and irregular cycle but have recently become concerned about possible long term side effects of the pill(breast health, spider veins and other vein problems)and the monthly cost of the pill since my insurance plan wont cover it. are their any other options for me (norplant, injections)that would be less costly and have fewer adverse side effects in the future? i am afraid if i simply get off the pill my cycles would return to their original state.
