Birth Control question

I take Estrostep FE for painful periods and consider it a godsend. I was talking to a few people about b/c and it was mentioned that b/c works by tricking you body into thinking that it is pregnant. Is this true? I tend not to take people's words at face value without a solid backing, so I am curious because it was also mentioned that it is not good for women to take birthcontrol for long periods of time. Then again, my mother has been noted for saying that she has used it for years and years.

Thank you!!!!
