I have been with the same man for nearly 10 years and we decided to wait until marriage to have intercourse. We have been intimate in other ways (oral, manual, etc.), but have not engaged in intercourse until this past week (just got married). I wasn't able to complete the act because it was very painful. The feeling is the same as I feel during a gynecological exam, like being stretched/torn open. I have been trying to work on relaxing and last night I was very optimistic, but mid-insertion the pain was just too much and we had to stop. My husband is very patient and does'nt want to cause me pain, but I'm beginning to think we need to just have a few shots of tequila, bite down, and fight through it or else we'll never get to a place where we BOTH enjoy intercourse. It's difficult to psych myself up to try again when I remember the pain of a few nights before, but I desperately want to work through this so that we can get on with our lives. I enjoy being intimate with my husband and love and trust him immensely, so I know I am emotionally more than ready. I have no past issues with sex, no childhood traumas, etc. What I'd like to know is: 1. is this normal? does my age (older) make things tougher? 2. will the pain end? how? 3. are there better positions that we might try? 4. we are meant for each other in every way... if we don't "fit" (he is well-endowed and I still request a smaller speculum at the OB-GYN), is there any way that I can increase my, for lack of a better term, vaginal capabilities? -- Thanks. -erin Next message: William F. von Almen, II, MD, FACOG: "Re: sharp pain during intercourse (27, virgin, just married) please help!"
