Pregnancy test while on the pill with light periods?

I'm 23 yrs old, and began taking ortho tricyclen last month. At day 21 (very last blue pill) I was not using condoms. On day 24 (3rd green placebo pill), as expected, a light period came. This concerned me because I have never had periods this light before.

My doctor assured me I was probably not pregnant, and having 2-3 days of light period for starting on ortho, is fine. She told me I could take a home pregnancy test if wanted to, but not necessary. She also told me it was fine to proceed to the second pack of ortho tricyclen.

The test was neg 7 days after my light period, day 4 of 2nd pack. Is this a good time to take the HPT? Or am I supposed to count from my old cycle (prior to ortho) since this month was new? I am confused because on some forum responses I see that you should take the HPT 10-14 days after conception, which does not always coincide w/ the 1st day of your missed period. I tried calling my doctor, but she is difficult to reach. I've felt no symptoms/side effects since starting the pill.

Sorry for the long post. I tried to be as detailed as possible so that I may get a detailed response from an expert in return. Thanks for your time.
