painful periods/ my sister

when my sister was 18 turning 19, she began having severe pain with her periods. one time, she woke me up in the middle of the night cause she was moaning, and she passed out from the pain. she's a really tough girl, and it takes her a lot to admit she has pain. she said the periods were not very heavy. she then went on birth control pills, and the pain seems to be a lot less now. she asked her doctor why the pain would be so bad, and the doctor said that it got worse probably because she had started ovulating. is this a common thing? i read somewhere that debilitating pain is not "normal", yet the doctor seemed to think that ovulation could normally cause this type of pain. what are your opinions on this?
