Rectal exam necessary?

Hi, I have a fairly quick question. I had my first GYN exam about 1 year ago at my college health center. The nurse practitioner did a rectal exam unfortunately with NO warning to me at all, I was shocked and had no idea what she was doing!!! But that's another story. My question is whether or not a rectal exam is necessary and what factors or symptoms would call for one. I have heard varying opinions but nothing straightforward. I am a 20 year old virgin with no major problems except for some symptoms of what I think may be vulvodynia or something similar. I know the current nurse practitioner at the health center did not do a rectal exam when my two friends recently went for their GYN exams and I'm just wondering if this is good or bad or neither. Although I would love to not have the rectal ever again, if it is important for my health I still would like it to be performed. Is it something I should ask for, as strange as that sounds? Thanks in advance for your help! Amy :)
