Re: birth control pillsFrom: Anna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 30 Mar 2001 16:12:19 -0600 (CST)
Hi, 1. There is a difference between bleeding and a period: Strictly speaking, a period is what you have after a normal cycle with ovulation. If you're on the pill, you don't ovulate, so while on the 1-week pill break, you're not really having a period, but withdrawal bleeding. So if you're pregnant and on the pill, you might have this withdrawal bleeding that might look just like your period. 2. Some pregnant women experience bleeding during their pregnancy. This can have many causes, but it's not a period (see 1.). So even if you're not on the pill, bleeding alone does not always mean that you're not pregnant. 3. If you should get pregnant while on the pill (if you're bad about not forgetting them or take medication that can weaken the effects etc.), there would also be other symptoms than no bleeding. So you would be able to tell at some point. Hope this helps. Anna
