Period during pregnancy?

I read on one of the earlier postings that it is possible to be pregnant when on BCPs, and still have a regular period. I was wondering how that could be? I know that at the end of each cycle, if the body doesn't detect pregnancy, then the corpus leuteum dies and then the lining of the uterus is shed. However, if pregnancy is detected, then the corpus leuteum remains alive to aid in hormone production during pregnancy. So, why, if you are pregnant, can you still have a normal period? Is it just break through bleeding? I was just curious as to how that worked. Thanks!
