Anne,

1) The morning after pill is NOT an abortion. Please read up on it before damning it. Know what your options are.

2) If you have a regular cycle and you know that you generally ovulate on a particular day, you can make an educated guess about whether you're safe. However, women have been known to ovulate left, right and center of that predicted date, so the best thing to do (other than emergency contraception, which you "don't believe in") would be to just wait it out, and if your period is late, take a test.
