Dear Leslie,

>I'm 25 yrs old, on birth control and a miraine sufferer. In Aug of 2000 I started experiencing galactorreah (breast discharge). It comes with my period once a month. However, my prolactin levels, when tested during the occurrance, were only 44 the first month, and 29 the second month. I also had a catscan which showed no remarkable abnormality of the pituitary gland. Could this be a thyroid problem?
No. If the thyroid abnormality were the main cause, you will continuously experience the galactorrhea, not only during your period.

It is more likely that you have Idiopathic Galactorrhea with Menses. Most of these patients have prolactin levels within the normal range and fertility is usually normal. The abnormality is not primarily hormonal but rather an excessive sensitivity of the breast to normal levels of circulating prolactin. Many cases are associated with a distant pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives.
