birth control and gynecological exam ?sFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netSun, 4 Mar 2001 16:55:15 -0600
I am 20 years old and have been involved in a loving, caring relationship with my boyfriend for almost a year and a half now. Both being virgins, we have put off having sex because we are terrified of pregnancy (and at one time we were both catholic school kids, where sexºd). We have decided to begin looking into birth control, and I have a few questions that I cannot seem to find the answers to. (Background: I have had very irregular periods since the beginning. I have very low body fat content and am very athletic, it's not uncommon for my period to come once every 4-5 months). First, how long must you be on a birth control pill before it is considered effective? I have read many articles on the pill that say you must begin taking the pill at a certain time in your cycle - what if your cycle is irregular like mine? What type of exam will they do at a, let's say planned parenthood clinic, to prescribe birth control pills? Would they do the same at a gynecologist's office? I have never had a gynecological exam (but am familiar with a general one, thanks to gyn101.com - it was very helpful), and I know that I should probably have one, but, being in college, I am on limited funds, and the exam would not be covered by my insurance. Thank you for any answers you can give me. - Elizabeth
