Re: 10 yo PMS?From: GA (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 22 Feb 2001 03:11:16 -0600 (CST)
I found your post interesting and would like to comment, because I have severe PMS, and mood swings from the age of 11 on, even before I began menstruating. I became quite the tyrant many months, as some months are worse than others. I was like a Jeckyl and Hyde, and lost many friends. I suffered very low self-esteem and much confusion until I learned about PMDD (more severe form of PMS) in my twenties. I am now 30. I found relief with prozac, believe it or not, but with your daughter being so young, I am not suggesting this for her as I don't even think doctors prescribe that to children. Anyway, I think the fact that you are educating your daughter about what might be causing her vicious moods is very helpful, because then she won't feel like there is something wrong with her character, like I thought for many years about myself. Whenever I'd get a particularly miserable PMS mood where I felt in a rage all the time, I'd go spend time alone doing things I enjoy, a sort of 'self-care', and time alone means my negative mood doesn't bother anyone else, therefore preventing me from feeling guilty).
Sounds like your daughter is getting ready to begin her monthly cycles
sooner than later. I've read that fluctuation of female reproductive
hormones can affect the way some females' brain chemistry works, i.e.
the hormone changes affect serotonin levels in some sensitive people.
I've also read that vitamin B6 can help, as well as Evening Primrose
Oil, Folic Acid. Exercise is supposed to be great to reduce mood
swings, as well as avoiding junk foods.
