Hi. I'm actually asking this on behalf of my girlfriend. My girlfriend is 20-yrs-old. During sexual intercourse, the inside of her vagina swells up and becomes very irritating. About 4 months ago, we became sick with gastrocentritis and had blood work done in the hospital to check the affects of our dehydration, at that time, they found out she had a urinary-tract infection. She was given anti-biotics for 10 days, but it was not followed up. Most recently, 2 weeks ago, her GYN told her she had a yeast infection. She was given an oral medication to only be taken 1 time and 3 inserts to be placed into her vagina for a period of 3 nights. She said the discharge went away after 1 week and that no longer was it irritating her, but yesterday, we attempted to have sexual intercourse and discovered that it was too discomforting for her. Her vagina swelled up and became very irritating. We don't know what this could be. Could it be she still has this infection? She no longer has a discharge. Also, 2 weeks ago, when she was at the GYN, my girlfriend discovered she had poly-cystic ovaries. She hasn't gotten her period since 11/99. Doctors were very concerned by this, and stated they will attempt to regulate with the help of the pill. In addition, my girlfriend was told she had low estrogen count. Can all these factors lead to this swelling and irritation of the vagina? I was reading on the web about Atrophic vaginitis, can that be a cause of this swelling and irritation? I'm trying to be really supportive to her, I'm just very nervous because I'm just learning little by little about a woman's body. Your prompt response will be sincerely appreciated.
