Extremely heavy period

I am almost 18 years old, and I have had irregular periods since my first at the age of 13. I had my period regularly for about one and a half years, then I stopped completely for about 6 months. I had it again with my normal, medium bleeding, and then I didn't have it again for about 6 months. This has continued every six months since then until now. This time, I got my period, but the bleeding is EXTREMELY heavy. I bleed through overnight, super maxis regularly, and I am not sure what is wrong. I have had some blood tests in the past to rule out some diseases, but with this menstration I have become very concerned. I am planning on seeing a GYN, but could you give me some clues as to what this may be, and what I can do to help with the heavy bleeding? Thank you.
