17 Year Old Daughter - Severe Menstrual Cramps

My 17th year old is suffering with menustral cramps. Our family doctor is unfortunately out on medical leave until March. I have considered taking her to my gyn, but she wants a female doctor (family doc is female). My gyn is part of a large medical school practice and I am not sure we need their specialized expertise at this time. She has suffered with these cramps for about a year, but they seem to be getting worse. Her flow is light and only lasts for about 4-5 days. She is doubled over in pain at times and is using 3 extra strength tylenol to take the edge off and gets her through her school day. So far Pamprin, Midol, Advil, etc do not help! Her best friend right now is a heating pad and the tylenol.

I had endo in my 20's that had to be removed as well as fibroids, but don't remember having this much pain. From what I have read in the archives, I am guessing she may have endo. Should I ask my gyn for a referral to one of the female gyn's in his practice at this time and by pass the family doctor ( I do not need a referral from the family doc for insurance purposes.) or try to find one in my community that has a more general gyn practice. We need to get this under control as she will be attending college out of state come fall.

Thanks for your help and advice.
