It's not uncommon to start ovulation about 2 years after the periods start. This is the right timing. Sounds like it might be mittleschmerz (pain int he middle of the month). With ovulation, the pain can be as you described and last 1-2 days. Oral contraceptives work well for this but should be used with caution in teeneagers who may not have finished growing. The pill can affect this growth if not completed.
