With absent perios for six months, I would also have suspected PCO. If you had all of the following and they were all normal, there would still be a chance of PCO if the sonogram were showing changes in the ovary consistent with PCO. The tests are FSH, LH, (the next three are for thyroid and the first is the most important) TSH, T3, T4 and Prolactin. It is also important to know whether or not there is leakage from the breast (either spontaneous or if a doctor tries to "milk" the area to make them leak). Any of these things can cause the period to be missing for 6 months.

For everyone's general information, pregnancy must also be checked into if one is sexually active.

To follow up with insulin resistance, you'll need a fasting blood sugar and a fasting insulin level and your doctor will have to check the ratio of one to the other.
