While I was an undergraduate, I took a course called Endocrinology, essentially the study of hormones, in which the endocrinology of reproduction was obviously a critical part. I was fascinated, and that started me thinking about Gynecology. Later, in medical school, I was initially drawn to Surgery, and I went so far as to begin arrangments for a surgical residency, but it just did not seem right. OB/GYN fit me so well, since it is the best rounded of all the specialities in my opinion. You have the long term, year after year, contact with your patients for their routine care, you have all the surgery that you want, and of course you get to deliver babies, which can be such fun. Your patients are generally young and healthy, so there is little of that hopeless chronic illness stuff that the internists have to do. Also, the patients are all women, and that is nice as well. Men whine too much, and cooperate so little with their care. Most OBs are happy with their choice, which is more than many doctors can say. I can't imagine doing anything else. I am sorry that you feel uncomfortable with male doctors. I can repeat that there is nothing sexual about the exam until I am blue in the fingers, but that is not going to change how you feel. Its a shame really. You are cutting yourself off from half the OBs in the country, and one or two of us are actually pretty good at this.
