Re: Going to the gyno after a bad experienceFrom: D. Ashley Hill, MD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 17 Aug 2000 21:56:30 -0500 (CDT)
Jinni- Your experience was thankfully extremely uncommon. Most states have laws that prevent forcing anyone who is mentally competent from having an unwanted exam. It's not clear to me whether or not you actually saw a gynecologist, or an ER doctor. The overwhelming majority of ER doctors are nice people (although often stressed out and rushed), but gynecologists are generally more comfortable with pelvic exams, including using the right sized speculum. I would encourage you to phone the main number of the hospital you went to and ask to speak to either the "patient advocate" or the "chief of risk management." Explain your story, then send them a certified letter. Once they find out that 2 people had to hold you down for a pelvic exam, there will be a =great deal= of attention paid to your complaint. I'll bet you anything that if you explain the situation to your gyn that he or she will go out of her or his way to treat you "extra special" to make up for the trauma you went through during your ER visit. Unless there is a medical reason causing pain (for example, severe infection, herpes, etc) a pelvic exam should not hurt. Sure, nobody wants to have a pelvic exam, but they should not be painful. Best wishes to you. Please do not let one bad experience alter the way you view doctors, nurses, and hospitals. Again, the overwhelming majority of health care providers entered this profession to help people, including you. Ashley
