Abnormal Pap Smear, why do I wait three months for next?

My doctor's Office reported to me an abnormal pap smear. I was told to wait three months to repeat the pap smear, so the cervic could heal. Is the cervical area injured during the original pap? Could not abnormal cells be cultured to identify their origin? Why do I have to wait three months, when I feel it needs to be identified ASAP, for health as well as emotional wellbeing?
