right ovarian cystFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 8 Dec 1999 21:50:31 EST
Dr M: I had a CT scan Monday (I've been sick with pyelonephritis which is clearing, odd since when the cystadenoma came up on my left side, about a week or so later I developed pyelo, and now after pain with the right ovary and ovarian cyst on it, I've come down with pyelo again, and have no previous hx of urinary or ovarian prior to October's run with the cystadenoma and pyelo)the CT scan showed that the cyst or whatever it is on the right ovary is now over 3CM. That was 12/6. On 11/28, when they did the ultrasound in the gyn office, it was about 16mm, and a few weeks prior to that it was 9mm. It was my attending physician that ordered the CT scan this week while I was in the hospital, and he said he would definitely be giving my gyn a full report on it. My question is, especially with the increased pain, pressure, low grade temp, some nausea, and my tummy now beginning to be a little distended - all so similar to what I just went through from October to November 17 - the day of surgery for removal of the cystadenoma and left ovary, how long should I wait to go back in and have them follow up on this? I'm really concerned, especially since it went from 16mm to over 3CM in 9 days time, that it could continue to grow at a relatively quick rate, and thus, end up diseasing my right ovary and me having to lose that one like I did the left one. I'm only 33, and certainly want to keep it for hormonal reasons, if at all possible, due to my age. I mean, it's been scanned, both CT and ultrasounds since October 15, and though it grew very little in October, and most of November, it now seems to taking off, so to speak. I don't want to bug my doc, I really do like and respect him, but I don't want too much or too long of "watchful waiting" to cause me to lose this ovary. If it continues to grow, and reaches 5 or so CM, would I be out of line, in requesting that it be removed? I really would like to have it checked in another week, instead of waiting two weeks, since it did go from 16mm to over 3CM in 9 days. Can't figure out why my body is attacking me - lol. What is the usual size for removal? Especially with my now history, and the fact that it seems to be constantly growing instead of diminishing. All of the scans and u/s have been taken at various times of the month, and it's still growing, so I would think that that should proclude ovulation, especially as many of the same physical symptoms and effects are being felt, the increased pain, nausea, increased urination, increased pressure, low grade temp, and abdomen beginning to distend again. I mean, I feel like that ovary is just a sitting duck, and that we are taking a really big 50/50% that it will go away, which it looks like it has no intentions of doing. Instead, every day it sits there, it seems to be growing a little more, and I don't know where the point would be that the ovary could become too diseased or affected to save. I'm just willing to take that risk with my body. I would rather go in, and if it turn out to be something simple, then fine. But for chance, that it does not turn out to be something simple, then at least we would have caught it before too much damage has been done. Is it within my right to ask for this? If so, how could I go about requesting this that is in a tactful and respectful way? Thank you for taking the time out of your busy life to be here for all of us. It does not go unappreciated, I assure you! Sincerely, Victoria
