Chicken pox is a herpes virus, Herpes Zoster. Like the other herpes viri, once contracted, it remains in your body forever, living in nerve root ganglia. A reexpression of this virus is known as shingles. Any condition that results in a compromise of the immune system (eg diabetes) makes an individual more susceptable.
