Hello! My name is Stephanie Endres. I am a nursing student at the University of North Dakota. I am following an expectant mom and she is 39 weeks, dilated 2 cm. Her midwife has told her to apply evening primrose oil to her cervix for a softening effect. Evening primrose oil contains gamma linolenic acid and has estrogen-like effects. Campbell, Peterkin, O'Grady, and Sanson (1998) asked women to nominate up to 3 treatments they had tried and found most effective for prementrual symptoms. Evening primrose oil and vitamins were the only supplements named. Two well-controlled studies were published in Controlled Clinical Trials. Budeiri, Li Wan Po, and Dornan (1996) reported that evening primrose oil is of little value in the management of premenstrual syndrome. According to Miller (1998), the only drug-interaction evening primrose oil has is with anticonvulsants because it may lower the seizure threshold. I would appreciate responses from any subscribers who use or know anything about this supplement since there is little known but could be so beneficial. Thank you, Stephanie Endres, College of Nursing Student, University of North Dakota
