Benefits and indications for B-12 shots

My Mother had Monthly B12 shots for many many years and was never diagnosed with anything other than anemia due to heavy periods. She swears by them...said that they made her feel wonderful. I had the same sort of periods up until my TAH 10 weeks ago and yet my Dr. refused to give me B12 shots. I still feel lousy (tired and probably depressed) even after the anemia is supposedly cured. (Although I haven't had a CBC since my last day in the hospital--9.2 hemoglobin count.) My question is what are the indications for B12 shots and can I get them without my GP's order for them? (I know that I've heard of athelets using B12 shots.)
