Diagnosis of Fibroids vs. Adenomyosis: Is this a common mistake? From: Tracy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 29 Oct 1999 12:41:30 -0500 (CDT)
Fibroids are fairly easy to diagnosis with bimanual pelvic exam and confirm with x-rays such as MRI's, however according to literature it is more difficult to diagnosis adenomyosis except with biopsy and pathology. Is it common for a diagnosis of leiomyomas to be given and surgically treated by hysterectomy, only to have the pathology report indicate that there were no leiomyomas identified and only focal areas of adenomyosis? I haven't been able to find this area discussed in depth and curious to know if it is a common problem. Also, the initial diagnosis of fibroids was based only on the symptom of right hip pain after a MRI indicated that there was a fibroid in the lower uterine segment. The fibroids were also treated with two injections of DepoLupron to help reduce their size, which was estimated at 10-12 weeks. Thank you for your input and expertise.
