Swollen and often infected tonsils

I am a 22 yr old female. Throughout the last 2 years of my college career I realized that my right tonsil would often become inflamed and contain puss whenever I was lacking sleep. I was not necessarily sick or have a soar throat when this happened. I recently went on a trip to Europe and was about 3 weeks deprived of sleep. My tonsils both began to act up. They were extremely inflamed with a lot of puss for about a week or so. They are both fine now. I do not ever take antibiotics because my experience is that my body always seems to recover without but I would like some feed back as to whether I should consider having my tonsils removed/ why they always end up infected. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but in high school I had mononucleosis. I mention this only because that was the first time I remember having pussy tonsils, but I also had a history or strep throat as a child.
