Question on patient rights

What can we as patients do to see that we get the medical care we need, as decided by our physicians? In other words, what can we as the consumer do to take some of the power away from HMO's and put it back with the medical people. My insurance company denied my surgery, a surgery that my physician and I had thoroughly discussed, and both of us agreed it was the best option. Insurance co would only go for a lesser surgery, which has not solved the basic problem.I have e-mailed my state rep and the insurance co about this, and plan to continue to loudly protest the insurance companies right to make my medical choices. What else can we do?
