Women who are pregnant are urged to get a flu shot if they're expecting to deliver during flu season. I plan to get one as soon as my health care provider makes them available, and I'm pregnant now. Determining its advisability is no different than for anyone else. Those with certain health conditions or occupational risks are urged to get the shot, as well as family members of those with certain health conditions. Also, anyone interested in avoiding the flu is urged to have this immunization. It protects against influenza, not so-called "stomach flu." Symptoms of influenza can include high fever (e.g. 102-104), sore throat, body aches, dry cough, and fatigue. While the flu shot does not prevent 100% of cases, it does a fairly good job. In spite of getting the flu in the 1997-98 season (even though I had the shot), I still get the shot every year. And, contrary to rumor, the shot can not cause the flu, since it contains no live virus (unlike, for example, the chicken pox vaccine). Hope you get pregnant soon!
