I think that you are talking about a hemorrhagic corpus luteal cyst, though this is certainly an extreme example. A small amount of bleeding into the corpus luteum (the area of ovulation) is very common, and generally presents no problems for the patient, but I have seen 2 patients in my career that had similar amounts of bleeding, and that required surgery and blood transfusions. There have been no recurrences in either of those patients.
