Re: Fibroids

Hi Deborah,

I too had fibroids which led to a hysterectomy. I was eating soy foods and I have wondered if they helped increase the size of my fibroids. I was using a lot of TVP (texturized vegetable protein) in place of meat. Soy foods have weak estrogens and some may argue that they would not have an effect. In fact, there is also the thought that they bind to estrogen receptors and block out our estrogen, thus lowering the estrogen we produce. So this should mean that it would not increase the size. I am not sure that there has been enough research to know for sure. For some women eating soy foods can be very helpful. However, from my experience, women who have fibroids and endo should be careful and perhaps experiment to see how it effects their symptoms. For some women it may help, for others it may increase their symptoms. I am speaking not only as a woman who has had problems with this, but also as a registered dietitian.

Best wishes,
