Dear Charlette,

I think the key to your problem is that you've consulted ER physicians about the problem, but it sounds like you have not made contact with a primary care provider with whom you could explore the symptoms over time. You need to have a gynecological exam, at minimum. The health care provider who does your exam may advise you to see an internist or a gastroenterologist (stomach and intestine specialist) based on the history and exam findings.

Emergency room personnel are excellent at handling emergencies; that is, they have expertise in determining which patients need immediate care in the hospital, and which patients can be seen by community, office-based providers later on. The mission of ER doctors is quick triage and care, not relationship-based primary care. Clearly, your situation requires the latter. All of the ERs in my area refer people with abdominal pain to community-based providers if they find no emergency condition that night. Please make an appointment with an office or clinic and form a partnership in which you can explore these symptoms.
