Postpartum Hypothyroidism... WHY???

After feeling like I was dying and convinced it was MS or fibromyalgia I went to the dr & my TSH came back at >120... yes.. one HUNDRED twenty on the scale where over 5.7 (or around there) is considered hypo. No wonder I've been a *little* tired lately! I just had a pretty traumatic pregnancy (abruption at 14 wks, PIH at 33 wks, induction at 35 weeks due to pre-eclampsia.) & delivered my wonderful son months ago.

I've run across some info that says women should as rule be screened for hypothyroidism post partum!?!?! That was a surprise to me. I have just a couple questions...

*** I am guessing this is common, hypothyroidism postpartum, is it ever something that is just a temporary condition? Or am I probably stuck with this from here on out?

*** I initially lost weight after having my son and was gradually losing a pound or two a week then the weight started coming back (yikes!!!) in spite of my diet/activity. Is it safe to assume that was the start of the hypothyroidism and that I *probably* wasn't hypothyrodic during my pregnancy????

*** I saw somewhere that hypothyrodic women have heavy periods, is this true? If so, do most women's periods return to normal when they take their thyroid pills?

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!! Alison
