Re: lost job and lost hopeFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 8 Sep 1999 09:15:31 -0600
I am sorry to hear about your job. I can tell you that things will get better, as will a lot of other people -- and I trulley believe that it will, but I'm afraid it won't ease your emotional pain. However, I can tell you that I've been there. I lost my job three weeks after my first surgery. I was in constant pain, pelvic pain. It was with me day and night. I finally found a doctor who could help me. We scheduled surgery a month in advance -- I told my employer that I would be out 3 days for recuperation. I did not count on the emergency surgery the day after my initial surgery and the three day hospital stay and additional week of recuperation time. They fired me -- I was devastated! I took them to the labor board. I didn't want money from them -- I didn't think that it would prove to my employer what a devasting and disabling disease this could be. So, I requested a large donation in my name from my employer to the Endometreosis Foundation. I won! It gave me a little piece of mind. And it helped me face the battle of reestablishing my confindence in the job market. I am now very upfront with my employers. I don't discuss it at interviews, but I do when I am offered the position -- I tell them my condition, and what it may entail. It's worked so far. But I still have the guilt when I have to take off from work because of the pain. I think that will always be with me! I hope my story helps you even a little. I know the pain is still real fresh -- so maybe it will help if you saved the responses from your message and go through them again at a later date. Good luck, and you can e-mail me privately at barb@mtbeef.org. It's my e-mail at work, so it may take me until morning to reply.
