Re: Who should I see for an anal fissure after childbirth? From: dbb (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 24 Aug 1999 19:02:12 -0400
Marie, I too have had a fissure since the birth of my son 9+ years ago. I saw a gastroenterologist, and then a general surgeon. He said he could repair it but it would require cutting into the sphincter, didn't sound pleasant so I asked for alternatives. I started using colace (otc stool softener) to the point of loose stools to allow the fissure to heal as much as it would. The colace (docusate sodium) is not habit forming, mostly mineral oil, so your system doesn't rely on it like it would a laxative. I was then cautioned to UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES let myself get constipated again. I keep the colace on hand, and if things don't seem to be happening properly, then I take a handful. With plenty of water and dietary management (plenty of fiber) I rarely have much of a problem. Doesn't cure it, but much better alternative than surgery when possible.
