There are a large number of conditions that can cause painful intercourse. In my experience infection is one of the less likely causes, although certain infections can certainly cause painful intercourse. Sometimes it takes a number of visits to the gynecologist to find the source of the pain, and in many cases it may require laparoscopic surgery to rule out endometriosis or scar tissue.
