Rachel- Most cities have a Planned Parenthood office. Although many people think of PP as an abortion clinic, in reality most PP clinics primarily perform examinations, do Pap smears, and test for STDs. Although I always feel that involving parents in important decisions is a good idea, I also realize that it is not always possible. You are very smart to talk about important health issues with a health care professional. The local Planned Parenthood clinic should be in the phone book. Finally, a quick bit of unasked-for advice: Please be very careful about STD. Every day I see young women who have any of a number of STDs, some that stay with them forever. Condoms don't protect against all STDs, but they are an excellent method of protecting against most of them. Another excellent idea is to stick with one guy, as every new sexual partner increases the chance of an STD. Best wishes, and thank you for the excellent question.
