Frequent yeast infections

I get yeast infections very often, at least four times per year. I use over-the-counter medications. What causes this, I'm getting concerned. My doctor prescribed MetroGel two months ago which didn't help. The last time I saw my doctor, she said it wasn't yeast but I have terrible vaginal itching and an odorless white discharge.
