Changing types of BCP, wait a month or still protected?

I just moved to Colorado. I have an appt with an OB/GYN that came highly recommended, but I won't be seen until Oct 1st. I will run out of my Ortho/Novum 31 one month prior to that.

I do have a leftover prescription for some triphasic BCP. I was wondering if I can just take that for a month, then once seen, get back on the Ortho. Would I still be protected against pregnancy, or would I have to wait a month?

I don't have a regular physician, or I would just ask them for a prescription. Does anyone think it would be okay to call my old OB/GYN and ask for a month's prescription?

And why does it take so long to get seen? I made the appt in July.

Thank you for any advice.
