Bromocriptine is reasonalbly safe, but there is a rebound effect (lactation often begins again after you finish the course of the drug) and frequent uncomfortable side effects, so I do not prescribe it routinely. As painful as engorgement can be, the safest and easiest route out of lactation is to use anti-inflammatories, a good, firm, support bra that fits snuggly, and avoid any breast or nipple stimulation.
