Uterus Produces Hormones?

From: Barb (anonymous@obgyn.net)

I've heard some claim that the (nonpregnant) uterus produces hormones and that this is a rationale for avoiding hysterectomy for nonmalignant conditions either pre- or postmenopausally. Certainly the premenopausal ovary produces estrogen and progesterone, but I wasn't aware that the uterus did also. Is there any merit to this claim?

Also, is there any validity to the argument that uterine fibroids produce toxins?
