AnemiaFrom: Michelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 5 Aug 1999 13:26:31 -0500 (CDT)
I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this question, but here goes: Ever since 1995 my blood-iron level has been below "normal"... a blood test in '95 showed my levels to be within the 120-125 area (can't remember the exact number)... however, recent tests have shown my iron levels to fluctuate between 111, 113, 114, etc. Several months ago, my doctor told me to take 1 iron pill every day, but nothing happened. Then she said to take 2 iron pills per day and after several months my blood-iron level as of mid-July was only 114 (one point higher than my last count). I was taking Wampole brand iron - ferrous fumerate to be specific (because I had heard it was less constipating). When I saw her in Mid-July and nothing had improved, she said she had no idea why it didn't even raise my levels even a little bit, considering I was taking 2 per day. She told me to specifically take Palafer (2 per day) for the next 3 months and she would do another blood test in October. Does anyone have any idea why my iron levels aren't going up with this much iron? What could this possibly indicate? Is there something my doctor should be looking for? She indicated that the last test showed my body was starving for iron due to some number count that was at 80.. but I don't remember what this number was specifically representative of... Any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.
