Anna and Supracervical vs total hysterectomyFrom: Sarah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 6 Jul 1999 12:45:42 -0600 (MDT)

Hi Anna, Did the gynocologist who recommended that you have a total abdominal hysterectomy for fibroids discuss with you before the surgery the fact that some (not all) women experience diminished intensity of their orgasms after having their uterus and/or cervix removed? It seems that many gynocologists operate under the assumption (pardon the pun!) that all women have orgasms that involve only the clitoris, and that removal of the uterus and/or cervix will have no negative impact on any woman's sexual pleasure. Believe me, if I had cancer or endometriosis, I would consider the loss of uterine contractions a good trade-off to be rid of either of those awful diseases. But to lose those deep inner contractions for something like benign fibroids is a loss that I have always found difficult to swallow, especially as I was not forewarned of this possibility by the gyn who recommended the surgery. One of the very best things about this site (OBGYN.NET) is that it has an entire section on alternatives to hysterectomy. If you have not already done so, go back to your doctor and report to him/her that your climaxes are (to quote you) "no where near as intense or satisfying" as they were before the surgery. Help your gynocologist be a better doctor to the women who follow you.
