Re: Supracervical vs total hysterectomyFrom: katherine (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 6 Jul 1999 13:09:44 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Manny. I had a supracervical hysterectomy (abdominally)on May 5th and like you, I had to wrestle beforehand with the question of what to keep and what to leave. Unlike many women, I guess, I kept the cervix but not the ovaries. I'm 47. I don't have cervical cancer in my family, cervical cancer is relatively easy to detect, and I didn't want anyone messing with my vagina. The surgeon didn't make any recommendation one way or the other, other than to say that if you leave the cervix and get cervical cancer and need radiation, the uterus won't be in place to help "shield" the bowel from the radiation. He also said that some people feel that leaving the cervix helps preserve the support and structure of the vagina/pelvic area, but he said research is lacking to prove whether or not this is true. As to outcomes, my orgasms are maybe a little different without the uterus, but still as intense. I'm not complaining. And my sex drive hasn't changed, and I can not take hormones. Best of luck to you - I hope this helps. By the way, I'm doing fine post hysterectomy. But for me, it was a long (but not a painful) recovery.
