bacterial vaginitis -- misery loves companyFrom: marilyn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 1 Jul 1999 11:55:16 -0500 (CDT)
I'm 44, haven't had sex w/husband in 6 months. Turned up a bacterial infection on routine check up in February. Dr didn't take culture, but prescribed Metrogel. Over the next 3+ months he prescribed Flagyl twice, Cleocin...never took a culture. Finally a few weeks ago I went back and insisted on a culture -- came up with e-coli bacteria and prescribed ampicillin. The doctor admitted I would have never gotten better on the medicines he had been prescribing...they don't work on e-coli bacteria. So I wasted my time, $, and my health during that time. I finished the ampicillin and insisted on being checked again. He examined me and said things look good -- no signs of infection. I asked him to take another culture to be sure. I got the results yesterday and found out I have a bacterial infection. Apparently the e-coli bacteria is gone and "underneath" is another bacteria to fight. Now I'm on Tetracycline for 10 days. My doctor retired yesterday (I went to him for 20 years) ...I'm going to go to a new doctor when I'm done with the Tetracycline and ask for another culture to make sure this infection is gone. The nurse I talked to sounded like this is not unusual == that after you eliminate the one infection it's not unusual to uncover another infection not as prevalent. Can anyone shed any light on this. I am totally frustrated and think very dark thoughts. I want to be upbeat, but it's hard. Thanks
