Obesity, infertility, and clomidFrom: Tonya (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 28 Jun 1999 11:05:52 -0500 (CDT)
I am 33 years old and weigh 375 lbs. I am in excellent health with a normal blood pressure. I have taken synthroid for low thyroid for several years and my dosage has been steadily increasing through the years. My TSH was recently tested and was high 10.5 and I go back in for another test in 2 weeks to see if it is still at the level, if so, my dosage will be increased. I have an extremely irregular menstrual cycle going for sometimes up to 6 months without ovulating. Recently it's been 40-69 days between cycles. I have a 5 year old daughter and I weighed 280 when I became pregnant with her. I gained 20 pounds during my pregnancy and had no gest. diabetes or pre-eclampsia or any other difficulties. I realize that my obesity is interfering with my menstrual cycle and that losing weight will probably regulate it. My metabolism is very slow and I have great difficulty in losing weight. My husband is almost 39 and we are anxious to have more children. It would probably take me over a year to lose enough weight to regulate my cycle and time is of the essence. My question then is, keeping in mind that losing weight is the most desirable option, would Clomid be a viable option for me? My husband is a 4th year medical student and recently read me statistics that the risk of twins with Clomid is a low 7% and even lower for more multiple births. Please advise, as I am anxious for more children.
