Susan, I experienced also severe breast engorgement when I decided to stop breastfeeding, about one month ago. My family doctor advised me to remove regularly as much milk as necessary to keep from feeling "bursting" or swollen and avoid the risk of having a breast infection. He recommended especially the use of breast binder instead bra to reduce rapidly milk supply through breasts compression. The binding helps in fact the drying up process and provides certainly the best solution for breast engorgement. In my case, the painful swell was appreciably attenuated for the first week and the milk supply decreased by the second and third week. Safe if the design is correct, cautions must however be practiced to avoid damage on pendulous or very heavy breasts. These can sag very quickly and nipple position may change dramatically. I’m a very well-endowed woman and my breasts have been considerably elongated with a nonelastic breast binder used without some precautions. My breasts are completely unfilled in their upper areas and look now too long and less attractive with nipples and areolas that point downward. One effective solution will be to use a reinforced elastic breast binder for excellent strength, support and preferably with a large bandage under the breasts in order to compensate the weight and keep them from sagging. This can be do easily yourself with wide cotton bandages wrapped round your chest. I hope this helps. Helene.
