I don't know whether your C/S was needed or not, but the color of the amniotic fluid is indicative of meconium, the baby's first bowel movement. This is reasonably common, and usually the baby is OK, though sometimes the baby will aspirate some of this stuff into his or her lungs. This can cause a chemical pneumonitis, resulting in severe pulmonary complications for the newborn.
