Kay,

I am sure you are aware that a law was recently passed which says that the facility which administers the mammogram must notify the patient in writing of the results of the test.

In March I had my annual physical and went for my annual mammogram. I received my notice from the doctor in due time that all of the tests were within normal limits. At the time of the mammogram, the technician told me everything looked fine. One month after the test I received the required written notice from the hospital about the results of the mammogram and I too felt something was wrong with my test.

Here is the opening paragraph of the letter............

"The result of your mammogram appears to be normal; however, it is very important for you to follow up with your doctor or health care provider. Your next mammogram should be done in one year."

I found this very confusing. If the results were normal, why did I have to follow up with my doctor. And, if there was a problem why didn't my doctor's office call and tell me he wanted to see me again. So I called the doctor's office and told them about the letter. They pulled the file and confirmed that the mammogram was fine and I would not have to come back until next March.

It seems to me that this is a very poorly constructed letter. As one who did have to have a followup exam and a biopsy because of what was seen on a mammogram in 1996, I know the fear which comes along with being told you have to go back to your doctor. There should be an easier and less confusing way to say your mammogram showed no abnormalities. Be sure to follow your doctor's recommendations for regular breast exams and mammograms.
